James Thornton

Photography is such a wide spread medium, having become an almost essential part of life, capturing snapshots of time and place, a process for storing memories, with imagery becoming a mechanism for the act of remembering. It is this process of remembering, through the medium of paint that I respond, re-evaluating time, place and imagery to explore memories (primarily) of landscape.
The process of making my work is a balance between the considered and the disordered. Beginning a new piece of work requires a clear selection of imagery. Sketches are worked on before and during the painting process to identify the objections of the work. It is during the painting process that unplanned elements occur and the work becomes a constant process of adding and removing. It is not necessarily mistake upon mistake, but there is a definite element of chance, which is both exciting and uneasy. This approach allows the paintings to develop, over time becoming instinctively linked to place, memory and nostalgia, fixated on a narrative of past emotional experiences.
