Pedro Ramalho

‘The artist is the art and what he produces is a
document.’ Entitled questions research painting as a
document of feelings and emotions, and how the subject
matter is less important than the expressive aspects.
My work is a reflection of my own experiences,
feelings and emotions. Upon reflection the work
returns to a subject I know best, ‘myself’. My own
works are based on moments when I experience strong
emotions, positioned aesthetically with more emphasis
in manipulation of the material than representation.
I have been painting portraits of people for whom I
have strong feelings, such as family members, as well
as self-portraits focusing on emotions I experience,
as they are alive in my memory. The experience of
life made me think sharper, and I use it when I’m
painting, taking attitudes and making choices, almost
spontaneous but conscientious. I use photography as
base of information for my works, taking my own photos
but focusing more in the physicality of painting than
the representation itself. Making choices help me
avoid to copying literally the photography,
information is lost in translation from photography to
painting. I focus in the relation between photography,
emotion and feeling expressed in painting.
