My current practice is informed by the medium of collage. I see myself as a collector of images. These images then form the basis of my work. Newspapers comprise the source of the majority of my work. Available daily and discarded just as often, the images found within form the supporting evidence to the stories of the day.
Behind my work lies the aim to create a sense of unease that comes into existence when the text of these newspapers is taken away, or blocked out.
Whilst it is still apparent that the images are from a newspaper, the viewer is not made aware of the stories they are illustrating. This then calls into question the concept of our ‘fear of the unknown’ in opposition to the belief that ‘ignorance is bliss’. I am interested in whether the viewers’ reaction to my work is one of fear, their imagination finding the worst possible answers to the blank spaces, or is it one of relief that they do not have to be made aware of the facts behind the image.
Ultimately I am inspired by the exploration into the importance of the unseen, the unknown and the taken away.
