‘If you build it, they will come’ James Earl Jones Field of Dreams
The desire to explore and play is innate to human beings, but naturally once you reach a certain age this is discouraged as it is not seen to be constructive. In response to this, my work is primarily concerned with humour, but much like the work of the Surrealist filmmakers and performers there is something more unsettling that lies beneath the playful façade.
The original footage for the video installation My Family, although staged, is intended to depict a loving family scene, but by omitting most of the dialogue and digitally plastering my expressionless face over the top of every character frame by frame, I subvert the family dynamic to disturbing effect as the boundaries between conventional relationships become blurred.
